CD4528B Dual Monostable Multivibrator Technical Summary

CD4528B Dual Monostable Multivibrator

Overview

The CD4528B is a dual monostable multivibrator integrated circuit designed for precision timing applications. Each device within the package is independently retriggerable and resettable, providing flexible pulse generation capabilities. The CD4528B can be triggered from either the rising or falling edge of an input pulse, allowing for versatile operation in various digital systems. The output pulse width is determined by external timing components, enabling precise control over timing intervals.

This CMOS device operates over a wide voltage range and features low power consumption, making it suitable for battery-powered applications. The CD4528B is particularly useful in applications requiring accurate pulse generation, time delay circuits, and sequential timing operations.

Functional Description

The CD4528B consists of two independent monostable multivibrators with complementary outputs (Q and Q̅). Each multivibrator features three trigger inputs (A, B, and C) and a reset input (R). The device can be triggered by either a positive-going transition (using inputs A and B) or a negative-going transition (using input C).

The output pulse width (tw) is determined by the external timing components (resistor and capacitor) connected to the RCx pins. The relationship between the timing components and output pulse width is given by the formula:

tw ≈ 0.7 × R × C

where R is in ohms and C is in farads.

The device features retrigger capability, allowing the output pulse to be extended by applying subsequent trigger pulses during the active output period. A logic high on the reset input (R) immediately terminates the output pulse, providing precise control over the timing operation.

Design Considerations

When designing with the CD4528B, several factors should be considered:
