Nocturnal Animals Whisker
Nocturnal Animals Whisker

Description: This circuit has proved very useful in keeping away from a terrace or a porch some bats and other nocturnal animals. You can use it for similar or different purposes. The lamp illuminates for a 4-5 seconds delay and stays off about one minute and 15 seconds. The photo resistor allows automatic switch-on of the circuit at dusk and switch-off at dawn. Supposing an eight hours operation per night, the lamp stays on for a total of about 30 minutes, allowing great current economy. More: IC1 is wired as an astable multivibrator with on and off time-delays as explained before. R1 & C1 set the on time-delay, R2 & C1 set the off time-delay. As there is no critical parameter, you can set these delays at your wish. Q1 is the lamp drive.

This circuit is designed to deter nocturnal animals such as bats from entering specific areas like terraces or porches. Its operation is based on a timed illumination system, wherein a lamp is activated for a short duration followed by an extended off period. The circuit utilizes a photo resistor (LDR) to enable automatic activation at dusk and deactivation at dawn, ensuring that the lamp operates only during the night when it is most effective.

The core of the circuit is an integrated circuit (IC1) configured as an astable multivibrator. This configuration allows the circuit to generate a continuous square wave output, which is crucial for establishing the on and off time delays. The resistors R1 and R2, in conjunction with the capacitor C1, determine the timing characteristics of the circuit. Specifically, R1 and C1 are responsible for the duration the lamp remains on, while R2 and C1 dictate the duration the lamp stays off. The values of these components can be adjusted to suit specific operational requirements, providing flexibility in the design.

Transistor Q1 serves as the lamp driver, controlling the power delivered to the lamp based on the output from IC1. When the output from IC1 is high, Q1 is activated, allowing current to flow through the lamp and illuminating it for the designated on time. After the time delay elapses, Q1 turns off, cutting power to the lamp and thereby conserving energy.

Overall, this circuit is efficient, allowing for an estimated operational time of approximately 30 minutes over an eight-hour night period, thus achieving significant energy savings. It is suitable for various applications beyond animal deterrence, including security lighting and garden illumination. This circuit has proved very useful in keeping away from a terrace or a porch some bats and other nocturnal animals.
