Description: This is a brief jam session to explore the capabilities of a recently completed step sequencer. This device is quite enjoyable and expands creative possibilities. A detailed post with the circuit and instructions for building it will be provided later. For now, it is worth mentioning that the sequencer is constructed using a single 4017 IC, which can trigger four different channels across ten possible steps. In the accompanying video, the sequencer is played alongside the SP-404 sampler, with efforts made to synchronize the tempo. The SP-404 also applies filtering effects to the sequenced sounds at times and to the drum patterns at others. The step sequencer triggers sounds from a modified toy circuit, which has been enhanced with pitch and distortion controls. Additionally, jacks connect the four channels of the sequencer to the desired sound bank of the toy.
The step sequencer design utilizes a CD4017 decade counter integrated circuit, which is capable of driving multiple outputs based on a clock input. Each output corresponds to a step in the sequence, allowing for the triggering of different audio channels. The sequencer can be configured to operate with a clock signal generated by a simple oscillator circuit or an external clock source, enabling precise timing control.
The integration with the SP-404 sampler adds complexity to the setup, allowing for real-time manipulation of the audio output. The SP-404's ability to filter sounds provides an additional layer of sound design, facilitating dynamic performance capabilities. The filtering can be applied selectively, enhancing either the sequenced sounds or the drum patterns, depending on the desired effect.
The toy circuit serves as the sound source, and modifications made to it include the addition of pitch and distortion controls. These modifications enhance the tonal variety and allow for expressive sound shaping during performance. The jacks connecting the sequencer's outputs to the toy's sound bank enable seamless integration, ensuring that each channel can be routed to different sounds or effects as required.
Overall, this step sequencer represents a versatile tool for music creation, combining simple digital logic with creative sound manipulation. The potential for further expansion and customization makes it an exciting project for electronic music enthusiasts.here is a little jam to test the possibilities of my recently finished step sequencer this little gadget is so much fun, and opens up my head of possibilities i have to write a proper post with circuit and instructions on how to build it i will just say for now that is made with a single 4017 that can trigger 4 different channels on each of th e 10 possible steps. on the video I`m playing the sequencer and the SP-404 sampler trying to match tempo and the sp404 is also filtering the sequenced sounds at times and the drum pattern at others . the step sequencer is triggering the sounds of a toy circuit which i modified adding also pitch and distortion controls .
plus the jacks connect the 4 channels of the sequencer to the desired sound bank on the toy
