Description: The Clarinet preamplifier is agile, detailed, and warm without being overly euphoric. It offers excellent sound staging, tonal balance, presence, and palpability. It surpasses other kit preamplifiers available and deserves serious consideration. Tube enthusiasts will appreciate this preamp, as the differences between quality tubes such as Telefunken, Amperex, Mazda, and other 12AU7/ECC82s are quite noticeable. High-quality tubes significantly enhance the performance of this preamp. The Clarinet not only delivers exceptional sound but also boasts impressive measurements. Its 10kHz square wave performance is fast and clean, exhibiting no ringing or instability. The distortion is predominantly second-order with minimal odd harmonic content. The Clarinet provides remarkable texture and emotion in music, creating a striking depth in audio systems. It is a worthy option for those seeking an affordable tube-based line stage that enhances the performance of their audio equipment. The enclosure is well-constructed and exceeds initial expectations. Initial impressions reveal a smooth sound profile. Among all the preamps tested, the Clarinet stands out as the best performer, offering incredible clarity and detail retrieval, particularly in the midrange, prompting listeners to replay passages for confirmation. The Clarinet delivers an airy and open sound similar to passive preamps, though it is more dynamic and impactful. This quality positions the Clarinet as superior to both purely passive and buffered passive preamps experienced over the past two decades. The design offers excellent value for the price, providing an impressive audio experience.
The Clarinet preamplifier circuit is designed to provide high-fidelity audio performance through a combination of advanced engineering and quality components. At its core, the preamp utilizes a tube-based amplification stage, typically employing 12AU7 or ECC82 vacuum tubes. These tubes are known for their warm tonal characteristics and ability to enhance the musicality of audio signals.
The circuit topology is likely to include a differential amplifier configuration, which helps to minimize noise and improve signal integrity. This configuration allows for excellent common-mode rejection, ensuring that any unwanted noise picked up from the environment is effectively canceled out. The output stage of the preamplifier is designed to drive a variety of load impedances, making it compatible with a wide range of audio equipment.
In terms of performance metrics, the Clarinet preamplifier is engineered to exhibit low distortion levels, primarily second-order harmonic distortion, which is generally perceived as more musical and pleasing to the ear. The absence of significant odd-order harmonics contributes to the clarity and detail retrieval that users have reported. The square wave response at 10kHz indicates that the circuit is well-damped, with minimal ringing, ensuring a faithful reproduction of transient signals.
The physical design of the Clarinet preamplifier is also noteworthy. It features a robust enclosure that not only protects the internal components but also contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal. The layout is designed to minimize interference between components, with careful attention to grounding and shielding practices that enhance performance.
Overall, the Clarinet preamplifier represents a well-thought-out design that balances performance, aesthetics, and affordability, making it an excellent choice for audiophiles seeking to elevate their listening experience. The Clarinet preamplifier is agile, detailed, and warm without being euphonic. It has excellent soundstaging, tonal balance, presence, and palpability. It is far better than any of the other kit preamplifiers I have heard to date, and is worth your serious consideration. Tube rollers will enjoy this preamp, as the differences between good Telefunk en, Amperex, Mazda, and other 12AU7/ECC82s are quite apparent. Really good ones will make this preamp sing. " - Kevin Kennedy The Clarinet not only sounds superb, it has impeccable measurements too. Below is the 10kHz square wave performance. Very fast and clean, no ringing or instability. The distortion is clearly 2nd order in nature with very little odd harmonic content. The Clarinet brings phenomenal texture and emotion to the music, and generates shocking depth in my system. Well worth a look, if you are hunting an affordable tube based line stage that will bring out the best in the rest of your gear.
Thought you might like to know that everything went fine with the Clarinet. The enclosure is really nice and better than you described. I am auditioning it now and my first impression is - smooth. I bought the Clarinet with confidence because I really liked your design/quality of the Bugle. First off, of all the preamps I`ve tried in my system the Clarinet is hands down the best. Listening to it last night was one of those "jaws agape" experiences for me. incredible clarity, detail retrieval like nothing I`ve experienced in my system, midrange texture and tonality that makes you stop and replay passages just to confirm your initial impressions. The Clarinet is an all-around performer. I love it. I did not expect the Clarinet to sound as airy and open as my purely passive preamp. In fact It probably is not quite as open and large a soundfield, but it is a hell of a lot more dynamic and has great slam.
In this way I think the Clarinet is superior to the purely passive and the buffered passive preamps I enjoyed during the last 20 years. Dang Jim you designed a fine line stage for an affordable price. It really rocks the joint. BTW this Clarinet kicks ass! I have never thought this much sound could be available for such a resonable investment of time and money.
