Technical Summary for 74221 Dual Monostable Multivibrator

74221 Dual Monostable Multivibrator Technical Summary

Overview

The 74221 is a dual monostable multivibrator belonging to the M54/M74HC221/221A family of high-speed CMOS logic devices. It provides two independent monostable (one-shot) circuits in a single package, offering precise timing control through external resistors (Rx) and capacitors (Cx). The device is designed for applications requiring accurate pulse generation, delay circuits, or timing recovery.

Key aspects of the 74221 include its ability to operate in both retriggerable and non-retriggerable modes, with Schmitt-trigger inputs for noise immunity. The external timing components allow for wide-ranging pulse width adjustments, making it versatile for various timing applications.

Functional Description

Stand-By State

In the stand-by state (no trigger applied), the external capacitor (Cx) is fully charged to VCC. The outputs remain in their stable state (typically low for Q and high for Q̅). The device consumes minimal power in this mode, making it energy-efficient for intermittent operation.

Triggering and Timing

When a valid trigger pulse is detected (either rising or falling edge, depending on configuration), the monostable circuit initiates a timing cycle. The pulse width (tw) is determined by the formula:

tw ≈ 0.7 × Rx × Cx

During this period, the output switches to its unstable state (Q goes high, Q̅ goes low) and remains there until the timing cycle completes. The device can be configured for retriggerable operation, where subsequent trigger pulses extend the output pulse duration.

Clamping Diode Protection

The 74221 includes an internal parasitic diode across the timing capacitor (Cx). When power is removed, Cx discharges through this diode. To prevent damage from surge currents during rapid power-down, an external clamping diode (Dx) is recommended for large values of Cx. The maximum forward current of the internal diode is approximately 20mA.

The required power-down time (tf) to avoid damage can be calculated as:

tf ≥ (VCC – 0.7) × Cx / 20mA

Package Information

The 74221 is available in multiple package options, including:

Pin configurations are standardized across packages, with each monostable circuit having dedicated trigger inputs, outputs, and timing component connections.

Design Considerations

Timing Component Selection

For accurate timing, use stable, low-leakage capacitors (e.g., ceramic or film) and precision resistors (1% tolerance recommended). Avoid electrolytic capacitors due to their high leakage current and tolerance variations.

Power Supply Decoupling

Place a 0.1μF ceramic capacitor close to the VCC pin to minimize noise and ensure stable operation. For systems with long power traces or high current demands, additional bulk capacitance (10μF) may be required.
