Technical Summary: HCC4020B / HCC4024B / HCC4040B CMOS Ripple-Carry Binary Counters

Overview

The HCC4020B, HCC4024B, and HCC4040B are medium-speed CMOS ripple-carry binary counters from the extended temperature range HCC4XXXB family. These devices feature fully static operation, buffered inputs/outputs, and standardized symmetrical output characteristics. Designed for 5V, 10V, and 15V operation, these counters are ideal for timing and frequency division applications in industrial, automotive, and consumer electronics.

The series includes three variants with different counting stages: the HCC4020B (14-stage), HCC4024B (7-stage), and HCC4040B (12-stage). All devices share common characteristics including low power consumption, high noise immunity, and compliance with JEDEC standards for B-series CMOS devices.

Functional Description

The HCC4020B, HCC4024B, and HCC4040B are asynchronous ripple-carry binary counters with different numbers of stages. Each device consists of master-slave flip-flops with the clock input buffered to improve noise immunity. The counters advance on the negative-going transition of the clock signal.

All counters feature a common reset input that, when brought high, clears all counter stages to zero. The reset function is synchronous with the clock, ensuring clean transitions. The buffered outputs provide improved drive capability compared to unbuffered designs.
