40174 Hex D-Type Flip-Flop with Clear Technical Summary

Overview

The 40174 is a high-reliability Hex D-Type Flip-Flop integrated circuit fabricated using complementary MOS (CMOS) technology. This device features six edge-triggered D-type flip-flops with common clock and master reset functionality. Designed for broad compatibility, it meets the stringent requirements of JEDEC Tentative Standard No. 13A for B-series CMOS devices. The 40174 operates across a wide voltage range and offers symmetrical output characteristics, making it suitable for both industrial and commercial applications where robust digital logic is required.

Key variants include the HCC40174B which extends the operating temperature range for more demanding environments. The CMOS construction provides excellent noise immunity and low power consumption, particularly in static conditions.

Functional Description

The 40174 contains six independent D-type flip-flops with a common clock input and asynchronous master reset. Each flip-flop features a data (D) input and complementary outputs (Q and Q̅). On the positive-going transition of the clock pulse, the logic level present at the D input is transferred to the Q output. A high level on the master reset (MR) input clears all flip-flops independently of the clock state.

The device features edge-triggered operation, meaning data is only transferred on the clock transition rather than during the entire high or low clock period. This provides improved noise immunity compared to level-triggered devices. All inputs have Schmitt trigger action which provides hysteresis for improved noise rejection, typically 0.9V at VDD = 5V.

Handling and Storage
