Speech activity detector for telephone lines
Speech activity detector for telephone lines

Description: The circuit is designed for speech activity detection in telephone lines. This detection is particularly beneficial for half-duplex conversations between two stations, for simultaneous transmission of voice and data over the same pair of cables by interspersing data within voice traffic, and for use in echo suppressor devices. The circuit includes a class amplifier to enhance weak analog signals in the range of 25-400 mW from an analog telephone line.

The integrated circuit IC1 is configured as a retriggerable monostable multivibrator. The transistor TR2 is responsible for discharging the timing capacitor C3 when a pulse train triggers input 2 of IC1, provided that the pulse period is shorter than the timing interval. The output at pin 3 of IC1 remains active (high) when either an analog or digital signal is detected. It transitions to a low level after a duration of TWgh seconds following the cessation of the input signal.

The circuit operates effectively by first amplifying the incoming analog signals using the class amplifier, ensuring that even weak signals can be detected reliably. The retriggerable monostable multivibrator configuration allows the circuit to react quickly to incoming signals, resetting the timing capacitor as needed to maintain accurate detection. The timing capacitor C3, along with the resistor network connected to IC1, determines the duration for which the output remains high after the input signal disappears. This feature is essential for applications where quick response to changes in signal is critical, such as in half-duplex communication systems where only one party speaks at a time.

Furthermore, the circuit's design allows it to handle both analog and digital signals, making it versatile for various applications, including those that require the integration of voice and data transmission. The use of echo suppressor devices enhances the quality of the communication by minimizing feedback and ensuring clear audio transmission. Overall, this circuit is a vital component for improving the efficiency and clarity of communication in telephone systems. The circuit can be used in telephone lines for speech activity detection purposes. This detection is very useful in the case of half-duplex conversation between two stations, in the case of simultaneous transmission of voice and data over the same pair of cables by the method of interspersion data on voice traffic, and also in echo suppressor devices. The circuit consists of a class- amplifier in order to amplify the weak analog signals (in the range 25-400 mW of an analog telephone line).

The IC1 is connected as a retriggerable monostable multivibrator with the Tr2 discharging the timing capacitor C3, if the pulse train reaches the trigger input 2 of IC1 with period less than the time: The output 3 of IC1 is active ON when an analog or digital signal is presented at the output and it drops to low level, TWgh seconds after the input signal has ceased to exist.
